The Pasadena Water, under the City Water and Power Department, a community-owned utility, provides water for about 162,176 residents living in the Pasadena City area, and portions of the unincorporated areas of Altadena, East Pasadena and San Gabriel. Established in 1874, the Pasadena Water and Power Department (PWP) collects water from approximately 40% from pumped local groundwater, whereas 60% from imported surface water purchased from the Metropolitan Water District (MWD). Less than 1% is purchased from neighboring agencies that combine surface water and groundwater.
