NJ American Water-Short Hills (NJAW), a subsidiary of American Water Works Company, Inc. (NYSE: AWK), serves approximately 217,230 Short Hills residents. Founded in 1886, NJ American Water-Short Hills System currently obtains its supply from a mix of sources. Mainly, 54% purchased water from the various water systems: Orange, Verona, Southeast Morris County Utilities Authority (SMCMUA), Passaic Valley Water Commission (PVWC)/Morris County Connection, Newark, Montclair, Madison, Livingston Water, New Jersey American Water Raritan System, Chatham Water Department, and Passaic Valley Water Commission. Twelve of which are groundwater sources, and three surface water sources. Other sources are 25% groundwater pumped from 25 wells and 21% surface water from four water intakes. All these secondary sources come from the following: the Passaic River, Canoe Brook, Brunswick Aquifer, glacial sand and gravel, and igneous and metamorphic rocks.
