The City of Powell Water, a public community water system under the local government, provides water to about 6,310 residents living in Powell, in Park County, Wyoming. Founded in 1908, the City of Powell Water System currently purchases its supply from the Shoshone Municipal Pipeline (SMP), which draws water from Buffalo Bill Reservoir, a surface water source located at the base of Cedar Mountain in the west part of Cody. Water obtained from the North Fork and South Fork Rivers is pumped into the reservoir through the Bureau of Reclamation's Spirit Mountain Energy Dissipation Structure pipe system to the treatment plant. After treatment through the 26-mile SMP pipeline, it is then distributed to the Powell Water Plant and Distribution System.
