City of Independence Utilities, a public community water system under the Water Department of the City, provides water to about 117,240 residents living in Independence, the fifth-largest city in Missouri and the county seat of Jackson County. Founded in 1883, the City of Independence Utilities System currently obtains supply from its groundwater sources, primarily 42 wells that pump from the Missouri River Alluvial Aquifer.
