The City of Barre Water Department provides water for about 14,000 people living in the Barre City area of Washington County. The City of Barre Water Department collects water from springs and streams and stores it in three reservoirs: Thurman W. Dix Reservoir, Upper Reservoir, and Lower Reservoir. The Dix Reservoir is designed in 1950 and holds around 93% of the raw untreated water. The water treatment facility has a capacity of 6 million gallons per day. The system has two different zones known as the low and high-pressure areas.
