The Belfast Water District, a quasi-municipal water utility, supplies water to about 5,698 residents living in the Belfast and Northport areas of Waldo County, Maine. The District was founded in 1887 as the Belfast Water Company and was incorporated as a non-profit Belfast Water District in 1919 by legislative charter. Its water comes from two gravel-packed wells that pump from the Goose River Aquifer in Swanville and Belfast, and the wells are in a location protected by the Aquifer/Watershed Overlay District Ordinance. The raw water is chemically treated through corrosion control with a 25% solution of sodium hydroxide, pH adjustment, disinfection with sodium hypochlorite, and fluoridation to prevent tooth decay. Belfast Water District operates four storage tanks and a distribution system comprising over 39 miles of water mains.
