The Brookings-Deuel Rural Water System supplies water to about 9,000 residents in the Toronto and Clear Lake areas in Brookings and Duel Counties, South Dakota, including 2,600 rural and lease town customers, four wholesale towns, eight commercial dairies, and two colonies. Founded in 1974, the Brookings-Deuel Rural Water System receives water from two sources - north of Bruce and northeast of Clear Lake. While Bruce draws from the Big Sioux Aquifer, Clear Lake pumps from Prairie Coteau and Pleistocene Aquifers. The water contains a fluoride additive for strong teeth and is disinfected with chlorine to control microbes.
