The City of Harrisburg Water supplies water to about 7,800 residents in the Harrisburg area of Lincoln County, South Dakota. Water sources include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. Harrisburg Water Department purchases 100% of its water from the Lewis and Clark Regional Water System, which draws from wells producing groundwater from the Missouri: Elk Point Aquifer adjacent to the Missouri River. The water is treated to remove unwanted contaminants, fluoridated, disinfected with sodium hypochlorite (bleach solution), and softened to a hardness of 8.5 to 9.5 grains.
