The City of Rapid Water Division, under the City Department of Public Works, provides water for about 66,481 residents living in the area of Rapid, South Dakota. Established in 1876, the City of Rapid Water Department currently obtains its supply from groundwater sources, eight wells that draw water from the Minnelusa and Madison Aquifers. The City also utilizes surface water from Rapid Creek that originates in the Rapid Creek drainage area west of Rapid City, which includes the Deerfield and Pactola Reservoirs.
