The Sioux Falls Water Division, under the City Public Works Department, provides water for about 173,300 residents living in the Sioux Falls area. Established in 1951, the Sioux Falls Water collects water from both groundwater (98%) and surface water (2%) sources, which includes the Big Sioux Aquifer, Middle Skunk Creek Aquifer, Big Sioux River, and purchased water from Lewis and Clark Regional Water System, when need arises.
