The AWU (Anchorage Water Utility), a municipal-owned and operated entity of Anchorage Water & Wastewater Utility (AWWU), provides water for about 240,000 residents living in the Anchorage Bowl, Northern Communities, and Girdwood Valley area. Established in 1921, the Municipality of Anchorage Water Utility (AWU) collects water from three sources: Eklutna Lake, Ship Creek, and groundwater accessed through a system of wells in the Northern Communities, the Anchorage Bowl, and Girdwood Valley.
