The Kodiak Water System, a public community water system under the local government, provides water to about 9,547 residents living in Kodiak, the main city and one of seven communities on Kodiak Island in Kodiak Island Borough, Alaska. Founded in 1940, Kodiak Water System System currently obtains its surface water supply from Monashka Reservoir located approximately five miles north of Kodiak. To hold the water before being treated and distributed, it is piped from the Monashka Reservoir to the Upper Reservoir. There are about 4 acres in the Monashka Reservoir drinking water protection area. The Upper Reservoir drinking water protection area is around 19 acres large and covers an area of about square miles. The Pillar Creek Reservoir, which is used as a backup water source for the system, is situated about 1.5 miles northwest of Kodiak 2. About 4 square miles make up the Pillar Creek Reservoir.
