The City of Petaluma Water, under the City Department of Public Works & Utilities, provides water for about 63,714 residents living in the area of Petaluma, California. Established in 1852, the City of Petaluma Public Works & Utilities is currently obtaining its supply from a ground water source, three production wells along the Russian River. To replenish the aquifers beneath the river, Petaluma purchases water from Sonoma Water, which originates from three reservoirs: Lake Pillsbury, Lake Mendocino and Lake Sonoma, and released into the Russian River.
