Santa Margarita Water District supplies water to about 161,264 residents living in the Rancho Santa Margarita area, Orange County, California. Established in 1964, the Santa Margarita Water District purchases treated surface water from the Metropolitan Water District of South California (MWDSC) and the Irvine Ranch Water District (IRWD)'s Baker Water Treatment Plant, which uses surface water from MWDSC and Santiago Reservoir (Irvine Lake). The MWDSC's water comes from the Colorado River and the State Water Project, which draws from the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta.
