The City of Santa Monica Water, under the City Department of Public Works, provides water for about 93,640 residents living in the area of Santa Monica, California. Established in 1886, the City of Santa Monica Water currently obtains its supply from a combination of sources: approximately 75% from local groundwater wells within the City and in West Los Angeles that draws water from three sub-basins within the Santa Monica Basin (Charnock, Olympic, and Arcadia Sub-basins). The 25% is purchased from Metropolitan Water District (MWD), which draws from two separate sources: Colorado River water, which is delivered from Lake Havasu and from the State Water Project from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.
