The City of Vernon Water System, a public community water system under the City Department of Public Utilities - Water Division, provides water for about 30,000 residents living in the area of Vernon, California. Established in 1905, the City of Vernon Public Utilities is currently obtaining its supply from a combination of sources: groundwater from local, deep wells in the Central Groundwater Basin; and purchased treated surface water from Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD), which is a blend of Colorado River and northern California water delivered through the State Water Project.
