Town of Winchendon Water, a public community water system under the Department of Public Works, provides water to about 5,706 residents living in Winchendon, Worcester County, Massachusetts. Founded in 1764, the Town of Winchendon Water System currently purchases its water supply from the Ash/Win Joint Water Authority, which draws water from the Upper Naukeag Lake located in Ashburnham Rivers, a surface water source. Raw water from Upper Naukeag Lake is then pumped into the Ashburnham-Winchendon Joint Water Filtration Plant for treatment, then into the 70-mile-long water distribution main, and finally into the two one-million-gallon-capacity tanks located on High Street and Elmwood Road. Furthermore, the system has two water booster pumps, and the second station, located on Route 140, provides water for emergency fire protection in the town.
