The San Bernardino Municipal Water Department (SBMWD) provides water for about 202,257 residents living in the San Bernardino area. Established in 1905, the San Bernardino Municipal Water Department collects water from a natural underground aquifer called the Bunker Hill Groundwater Basin. SBMWD also imports water from the State Water Project and spreads this water in local basins to replenish its groundwater. Both natural and imported water percolates through the ground to be captured and stored in the Bunker Hill Basin.
