The City of San Juan Capistrano Water, a public community water system under the City Department of Public Works - Utility Services, provides water for about 40,000 residents living in the area of San Juan Capistrano, California. Established in 1776, the City of San Juan Capistrano Water System is currently obtaining its supply from a surface water source via purchase from the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWDSC), which uses water from the Sacramento River Delta and Colorado River conveyed to Southern California via the California Aqueduct (also known as the State Water Project) and the Colorado River Aqueduct. Additionally, the City is supplied with treated water from the Ground Water Recovery Plant and one potable production well located in the Northern portion of the City.
