Santa Ynez River Water Conservation District, Improvement District No. 1, a public community water system under the local government, provides water to about 7,022 residents living in Santa Ynez, Santa Barbara County, California. Founded in 1959, the Santa Ynez River Water Conservation District Improvement District No. 1 System currently obtains its supply from mixed sources. The groundwater sources: Seven of the 17 wells drill into the Santa Ynez Upland Groundwater Basin, Around 130 square miles of the Santa Ynez Valley, east of Buellton, and Less than 500 feet to more than 1,300 feet in depth, while the remaining ten wells drill approximately 70 feet or less into the subsurface alluvial portion of the lower Santa Ynez River. Additionally, surface water is obtained from Cachuma Water, the southern coast of Santa Barbara County, and the California Aqueduct. This water is treated at the Polonio Pass Water Treatment Plant in San Luis Obispo County before entering the 143-mile pipeline that travels to the Mesa Verde Pumping Plant of the District in Santa Ynez.
