Sunbury Municipal Authority, a public water supply service authority, provides water to about 11,043 residents living in Sunbury, a city and county seat of Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1946, the Sunbury Municipal Authority System currently obtains its surface water supply from two sources. Little Shamokin Creek is the area's main water source. A dam is situated on the creek upstream of the filtration plant. Three million gallons of water are held back by the dam, creating reservoir #1. Large raw water reservoirs #4 and #5 are reached by gravity from reservoir #1 using sixteen-inch pipes, while the fourth reservoir has a capacity of seventeen million gallons. The fifth reservoir has a capacity of 25 million gallons. Additionally, water pumped from the Susquehanna River serves as the secondary source during periods of dry weather or drought where intake is located on the west branch of the river. To reach the city's users, the treated water is pumped through a transmission and distribution system made up of nearly 35 miles of pipe with sizes ranging from 3/4" service lines to 24" transmission mains. Approximately 5,000 connections and 149 fire hydrants are present in the distribution system.
