The Union Public Utility District (UPUD) supplies water to about 4,668 residents in the Murphys, Carson Hill, Douglas Flat, and Vallecito areas of Calaveras County. Founded in 1946 as an independent special district, the Union Public Utility District gets its water from the Utica Water & Power Authority, which receives surface water from the North Fork Stanislaus River through Hunters Reservoir. The water is pumped to the UPUD's Cademartori Reservoir and then to the water treatment facilities before supplying the residents.
