The Village of Brookfield Water Department, a public community water system under the City Department of Public Works, provides water for about 18,978 residents living in Brookfield (formerly Grossdale), a village in Cook County, Illinois. Established in 1893, the Village of Brookfield Water Department System currently purchases its surface water supply from the Brookfield North Riverside Water Commission, a 663,707,000-gallon supply of water from the City of Chicago, which was purchased by the Village of Brookfield. The two water treatment plants in Chicago use Lake Michigan as a supply of water. The Jardine Water Purification Plant serves the city's northern and suburban neighborhoods. The South Water Purification Plant serves the city's and suburbs' southern portions. The only great lake wholly contained within the United States is Lake Michigan. It is the second-largest great lake, bordering Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin. With 1,180 cubic miles of water, it is the third-largest by volume and third-largest by area.
