The Hinsdale Water Department, a public community water system under the Local Government Water and Sewer Department, provides water for about 17,940 residents living in Hinsdale, a village in Cook and DuPage counties in Illinois. Established in 1873, the Hinsdale Water Department System surface water supply is from Lake Michigan, purchased From the DuPage Water Commission (DWC) from the City of Chicago via the Lexington St. Pumping Station for distribution to the DWC 28 member communities and private utilities covering DuPage County. Each member purchases its water from the DWC for distribution to their customers. Lake Michigan is the only Great Lake that is contained within the United States. It borders Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin, and is the second-largest Great Lake by volume with 1,180 cubic miles of water and the third-largest by area.
