Boston has multiple water providers: MWRA Water and Boston Water. This page provides information about MWRA Water.

The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) is a public authority in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts that provides wholesale drinking water and sewage services. The MWRA provides water for about 2,550,000 residents living primarily in the Boston area. Established in 1985, the MWRA collects water from Quabbin Reservoir, Wachusett Reservoir, and sometimes Ware River but only during high flow. Both Sudbury Reservoir and Foss Reservoir, a.k.a. Framingham Reservoir are on standby when backup supplies are needed.

Lead levels in the drinking water of some cities across the United States are too high, potentially creating public-health issues for the people living in those areas.

What about MWRA Water? How much lead is in your drinking water? And how do those levels compare to other cities in the state? We examined data from hundreds of cities across the nation to understand and grade your water quality.

As you can see, MWRA Water received an average grade because the amounts of contaminants found in the water supply were higher than most other water providers we've analyzed.
