The Leyden Township Water District, a public community water system under the Sewer & Water of the Township Department of Public Works, provides water for about 16,000 residents living in Leyden Township, one of 29 townships in Cook County, Illinois. Established in 1850, the Leyden Township Water District currently purchase surface water from the City of Chicago which utilizes Lake Michigan as its source via two water treatment plants namely: the Jardine Water Purification Plant, which serves the northern areas of the city and suburbs, and the Sawyer Water Purification Plant, which serves the southern areas of the city and suburbs.
