The Sault Sainte Marie Water, a public community water system under the City Department of Public Works, provides water for about 14,689 residents living in the area of Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan, the only city and county seat of Chippewa County. Established as a town in 1888 and incorporated as a city in 1912, the City of Sault Sainte Marie Water System currently obtains its supply from a sole surface water source, the St Mary’s River that joins Lake Superior with Lake Huron.
