The City of Detroit Lakes Utilities provides water for about 9,869 residents living in the Detroit Lakes area of Becker County. The City supplies groundwater from four wells, ranging from 230 to 232 feet deep and tapping from the Quaternary Buried Artesian Aquifer. The Water Department uses sand filtration to remove unwanted iron and adds chlorine, fluoride, and ortho-polyphosphate to the water for disinfection, dental health, and corrosion control. The City of Detroit Lakes Utilities operates a Water Treatment Plant with a capacity of about 3 million gallons per day, two clear storage wells, and water towers.
