The Gasparilla Island Water Association, Inc. (GIWA), a non-profit membership-owned water provider, provides water services to about 6,254 residents living in the Placida area of Charlotte County, Florida. Founded in 1966, GIWA collects over 80% of its water from the middle intermediate aquifer and is treated by a Reverse Osmosis Plant. The source water is supplemented by groundwater from a surficial aquifer treated by a Color Removal Plant, blended together, and added with phosphoric acid for corrosion inhibition and chloramine for disinfection. When necessary, GIWA purchases water from Charlotte County Utilities, which receives from the Peace River Regional Water Treatment Plant.
