The Gulfport Water, a public community water system under the City Department of Public Works - Water, provides water for about 12,600 residents living in the area of Gulfport, a city in Pinellas County, Florida, bordering St. Petersburg and Boca Ciega Bay. Established in 1910, Gulfport Water System currently obtains its supply via purchase from the City of St. Petersburg. This water is a dynamic blend of groundwater, surface water, and desalinated water. Groundwater is primarily supplied by 11 different wellfields pumping water from the Floridan Aquifer. Surface water is drawn from the Alafa River, the Hillsborough River, and the Tampa Bypass Canal while Hillsborough Bay is the primary supply for the Tampa Bay Seawater Desalination facility, which uses reverse osmosis to separate drinking water from seawater.
