The Charter Township of Van Buren Water, under the Township Public Services Department, provides water for about 27,359 residents living in the Belleville area, Michigan. Established in 1946, the Van Buren Charter Township Water obtains its supply from a surface water source via purchase from the GreatLakes Water Authority (GLWA), which uses the Detroit River, situated within the Lake St. Clair, Clinton River, Detroit River, Rouge River, Ecorse River, watersheds in the U.S. and parts of the Thames River, Little River, Turkey Creek and Sydenham watersheds in Canada.
