The Athens-Clarke County Water System, under the Athens-Clarke County Public Utilities Department, provides water for about 120,266 residents living in the Athens area. Established in 1881, the Athens-Clarke Co Water System collects water from three surface water sources – the North Oconee River, the Middle Oconee River and the Bear Creek Reservoir, pumped to the J.G. Beacham Water Treatment Plant.
