American Water-Fort Polk South Water System, operated by American Water's Military Services Group, a subsidiary of American Water under the Defense Utility Privatization program. In September 2008, it was granted a 50-year contract to own and operate the water distribution and wastewater collection systems for military communities around the country, including about 10,902 residents living in Fort Polk South, a United States Army installation located in Vernon Parish, approximately ten miles east of Leesville, Louisiana. Founded in 1886, American Water-Fort Polk South Water System currently obtains its supply from groundwater sources, primarily wells that pump twelve wells with a network of 100-mole-pipe and then store them in fourteen tanks (both ground & elevated), with a total storage capacity of seven million gallons.
