American Water-Wright Patterson Air Force Base Area A, owned and operated by American Water’s Military Services Group, a subsidiary of American Water under the Defense Utility Privatization program, was granted in September 2017 a 50-year contract to own and operate the water distribution and wastewater collection systems for military communities around the country, including about 16,551 residents living in the Vandalia area. American Water-Wright Patterson Air Force Base Area A System currently obtains its groundwater supply from six wells pumped from the Great Miami Buried Valley Aquifer. The Area A public water system (PWS) has interconnections with the City of Fairborn and is capable of supplying water to Area A to meet emergency needs.
