The City of Petersburg Water, under the City Department of Public Utilities, provides water for about 32,000 residents living in the Petersburg area, Virginia. Established in 1748, the Petersburg City Water currently obtains its supply via purchase from the Appomattox River Water Authority (ARWA), which obtains its source water from Chesdin Reservoir, a surface water impoundment of the Appomattox River.
