The City of Lorain Water System, under the City Department of Utilities, provides water for about 64,152 residents living in the area of Lorain, Ohio. Established in 1807, the City of Lorain Utilities Department is currently obtaining its supply from a surface water source: the central basin of Lake Erie, west of Black River Harbor. This water comes via the Detroit River from all the upper lakes -- Superior, Michigan, and Huron -- the St. Clair River, Lake St. Clair, and numerous tributaries.
