The City of Winterset Water supplies water to about 5,353 residents in the Winterset area and 342 commercial and industrial customers in Madison County, Iowa. Winterset Utilities' Water Department collects surface water from Cedar Lake and supplements it with groundwater under the influence of surface water from the Middle River. The Cedar Lake is an artificial reservoir of 10,700 acres of watershed built in 1938 and located northeast of Winterset. The water from all sources is treated at the City's Water Treatment Facility at 3301 Cedar Bridge Road, which utilizes a reverse osmosis system to remove nitrates in addition to the conventional treatment processes.
