The Town of Oak Island, under the Town Public Utilities Department, provides water for about 23,635 residents living in the Oak Island area, North Carolina. Established in 1999, the Oak Island Public Utilities obtains its supply via purchase from Brunswick County, which draws from a groundwater source, 14 wells that pump from the Castle Hayne Aquifer. The town also has a backup water source, the N.E. Cape Fear River (surface water), and two wells that pump from the Pee Dee Aquifer (groundwater).
