The City of Brownwood Water, a public community water system under the City Department of Public Works, provides water for about 19,288 residents living in Brownwood, located south of the center of Brown County, west of the Pecan Bayou. The City of Brownwood Water System, which was established in 1803, currently purchases surface water supply from Brown County Water Improvement District No. 1, obtained from a variety of sources in the district, including Lake Brownwood and Pecan Bayou.
