The Richardson City Water Utilities Department is a municipal water distribution and wastewater collection utility owned by the City. The Water Utilities Department provides water for about 104,300 residents living in the Richardson area. Established in 1965, the Richardson Water Department purchases wholesale treated water from the North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) who has surface water rights from Lake Lavon, Lake Chapman, Lake Texoma and Lake Tawakoni.
