The Yonkers Water Department provides water for about 196,086 residents living in the Yonkers area. Established in 1872, the Yonkers Water Department obtains its drinking water from the New York City Water Supply System, an unfiltered surface water. Most of this water originates from two protected watershed areas, the Catskill and Delaware, located in Delaware, Greene, Schoharie, Sullivan and Ulster counties west of the Hudson River in upstate New York.
