American Water-United States Military Academy-West Point Lusk, operated by American Water's Military Services Group, a subsidiary of American Water, under the Defense Utility Privatization program, was granted a 50-year contract in 2019 to own and operate the water distribution and wastewater collection systems for military communities around the country, including providing water to about 8,000 residents living in Highlands, New York. Founded in 1886, the American Water-United States Military Academy-West Point Lusk System currently obtains its supply from the Stony Lonesome and Lusk Water Treatment Plants, as well as the Lusk Reservoir; these are all surface water sources. Furthermore, the system also includes 12 tanks, 200 fire hydrants, 1,000 valves, and around 400,000 linear feet of water piping.
