The City of The Dalles Water, a public community water system under the City Department of Public Works, provides water to about 12,494 residents in The Dalles, the largest city in Wasco County, Oregon. Founded in 1857, the City of The Dalles Water System currently obtains water from multiple sources. The 85% is surface water supply from the 22,000-acre protected watershed. Behind Crow Creek Dam, rainwater and snowmelt from the Dog River, Alder Creek, Crow Creek, and South Fork of Mill Creek are collected. The Wick Water Treatment Plant is eight miles downstream of the dam, which can hold 267 million gallons of water. The remaining 15% comes from groundwater sources from three wells that are supplemental during the summer months and are drawn from "The Dalles Pool," an aquifer beneath The Dalles that extends just a little bit outside the city's urban expansion area.
