Dare County Water Department—Cape Hatteras, a public community water system, provides water to about 5,486 residents living in Buxton, North Carolina. Founded in 1870, Dare County Water Department-Cape Hatteras System currently obtains its supply from groundwater sources, primarily 19 wells that drill into the Mid-Yorktown Aquifer and Upper Yorktown Aquifer underneath the area. Additionally, they have a total of five reverse osmosis water treatment plants located in Kill Devil Hills, Stumpy Point, Rodanthe, Frisco, and Roanoke Island. The first four locations have wells drilled to depths ranging from 300 to 400 feet, while the last is 200 feet deep.
