The City of Thornton Water, under the City Infrastructure Department, provides water for about 152,248 residents living in the Thornton area. Established in 1956, Thornton’s drinking water originates as snow melt in the Rocky Mountains. The city uses two water sources for our drinking water: the South Platte River and Clear Creek. Water from the South Platte River is diverted into our network of gravel lakes. Water from Clear Creek is diverted and stored mostly in Standley Lake.
