The Meade County Water District, a public community water system, provides water for about 14,378 residents living in the area of Brandenburg, a home rule-class city on the Ohio River in Meade County, Kentucky. Established in 1983, the Meade County Water System currently obtains its supply via purchase from Hardin County Water District #1, owner and operator of three treatment plants namely: the Pirtle Springs Plant (Pirtle Spring and Head of Rough Spring, both classified as groundwater under the influence of surface water); the Muldraugh Plant (groundwater from wells in the West Point aquifer); and the Central Plant (surface water from McCracken Spring and is operated periodically to provide supplemental water during high demand or when the Muldraugh Plant is receiving maintenance). Additionally, Hardin County #1 purchases a small percentage of supplemental water from Hardin County #2 (City Spring of Elizabethtown and White Mills Spring) and Louisville (Ohio River).
