The Limestone County Water & Sewer Authority (LCWSA), a municipal utility services operator, provides water for about 65,000 residents living in the area of Athens, Alabama. Established in 1965, the Limestone County Water & Sewer Authority is currently obtaining its supply from a combination of sources: surface water from the Elk, ground water from Lawson and Newby Wells, and treated water pumped from Greenbrier (Horton Spring), combined with water purchased from Athens Utilities and Decatur Utilities.
