The Greenville Water Works & Sewer Board is a public community water system under the City Mayor and governed by a board composed of five members that provides water to about 9,290 residents living in Greenville, the county seat of Butler County, Alabama. Founded in 1955 by a City Council resolution, Greenville Water Works & Sewer Board System currently obtains its supply from two groundwater sources, primarily six wells producing from Ripley Formation and purchased from Butler County Water Authority which has six wells that drill into the Nanafalia-Clayton and the Providence-Ripley aquifer
